What causes it
What causes Erectile Dysfunction?
Physical
- Not enough blood flows into the penis: Heart Disease, Diabetes, High Cholesterol, Hypertension.
- Nerve signals from the brain or spinal cord do not reach the penis: Stroke, Diabetes, Multiple sclerosis or Injury/Surgery in the pelvic area can harm nerves to the penis.
- Surgery or radiation for treatment of cancers near the pelvis can affect the penis’ functionality.
- Medications: ED is a common side effect of a number of medications. It can affect a man’s hormones, nerves or blood circulation.
Psychological
The brain plays a key role in triggering the series of physical events that cause an erection starting with feelings of sexual excitement. Depression, anxiety, stress or relationship problems can cause or worsen ED.
Lifestyle
Smoking, excessive alcohol consumption and drug abuse can damage the blood vessels and reduce blood flow to the penis. Being overweight and getting too little exercise can also cause ED.
Erections rely on healthy blood flow to the penile tissue. Treatment of ED focuses on forming new blood vessels thus increasing penile blood flow.
