What causes it
What causes Saggy Breast?
Aging
Collagen and elastin is the most abundant protein in our body that gives the skin its strength and elasticity. After the age of 20, our body produces less collagen and elastin. As a result, there is further over stretching and weakening of the fibrous frame which holds up the breast firmly and in shape.
Pregnancy
During pregnancy the breast becomes bigger and swollen with milk. This causes the fibrous frame which holds the breasts in their youthful attractive shape to break down and stretch. Other than that, during pregnancy the mother puts on weight and then loses it after delivery. Therefore leaving the enlarged breasts hanging in an unsupported-stretched position.
High Body Mass Index(BMI)
Being overweight puts pressure on the skin tissue and the extra weight may add additional weight to the breasts. This causes the skin and breast tissue to stretch and droop. Other than that, higher breast mass has a higher chance of sagging because it is more vulnerable to gravity.
The aim of treatment is lifting a sagging breast in order to enhance its shape for a more attractive appearance.
Treatment Options
Breast lift, or mastopexy procedure raises the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the breast tissue to reshape and support the improved breast contour. Breast lift does not change the size of breast tissue. Hence, this procedure is sometimes combined with breast augmentation or reduction surgery.
To reduce saggy breasts, some surgeons may suggest breast augmentation. Depending on the severity of saggy breast, a person may require both an augmentation and a breast lift. In cases of mild sagging, breast implants may help to fill loose breast skin and create a more lifted appearance.
Similar Conditions
Breast asymmetry refers to when one breast is a different size, shape or position than the other. Majority of women have mild breast asymmetry. However, when the asymmetry is significant it may affect a person’s body image, self-esteem and confidence.
