Hair loss also known as alopecia or baldness refers to loss of hair from part of the head or body. Most people have up to 150,000 strands of hair on their heads. Each person tends to shed about 50 to 150 strands of hair in a day which is normal. Anything above this amount is classified as hair loss.

What causes it

What causes Hair Loss?

Hereditary

The most common cause of hair loss is genetic predisposition that happens with aging. This type of hair loss is called androgenic alopecia or male/female pattern baldness.

Hormonal changes

Women commonly experience hair loss after menopause, childbirth, and pregnancy due to hormone changes.

Autoimmune diseases

This condition is called alopecia areata where the immune system attacks the hair follicles causing hair to fall out in patches. In most people, the hair grows back but it is possible to experience hair loss again.

Excessive stress and illness

Sudden hair loss that results from emotional or physical shock like a traumatic event, period of extreme stress or a serious illness. This type of hair loss is temporary.

Others

Other causes include lack of nutrients (protein, iron, zinc), tight hairstyles, hair care procedures (perms, bleaching, dyeing hair), radiation therapy or chemotherapy, underlying medical conditions such as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disease and scalp infections.

Treatment focuses on stimulating hair follicles to stop hair loss, speed up hair growth and strengthen the hair.

Treatment Options

GEM Hair Grow involves microneedling and applying growth factor from patient's own blood to stimulate inactive hair follicles resulting in the growth of new healthy hair and thickening of existing hairs. It also promotes healing of the skin and your scalp should become much healthier over time due to active production of new tissue.

Hair transplant is a treatment designed to combat baldness & hair loss problems with a high success rate of improvement. It  is a surgical procedure that removes hair follicles from one part of the body, called the 'donor site', to a bald or balding part of the body known as the 'recipient site'.

Similar Conditions

Excessive hair refers to unwanted body and facial hair in both men and women. We all have hair on almost every part of our bodies but some people have more than others. The presence of excess hair can lead to feelings of self-consciousness, but the condition itself is not dangerous.
