You are still young, have no ailments and are well rested. Yet, another family member / friend / colleague commented today that you look tired. That is because there is most probably presence of tear trough under your eyes.
Tear trough is a crescent-like groove that can be observed under the eyes. The terminology is most probably so due to the fact that it indeed can serve as a drainage for tears flowing from the inner eye. It can appear even in children but most tear troughs are made worse by aging. Tear trough varies in severity and it usually gives a person a tired look. One therefore looks much older than they should.
Anatomically, there is a ligamentous attachment from the anterior cheek bone to the superficial skin along the lower border of the lower eyelid. This attachment is usually not visible when a person is young. However, as the person ages, the skin becomes thin, supportive fat pads are lost and the ligamentous attachment becomes loose.
The tear trough is finally revealed as a demarcation line between the lower eyelid and the anterior cheeks. Imagine drawing a simple smiley face. Add a semi-crescent line underneath the eyes and even a smiley face will start to look old and aged.
Sometimes, the tear trough itself can be mild but made to look worse by eyebags that protrude from above it. Such tear trough presents a higher difficulty to treat for the physician.
Non-surgical methods are of course the primary and best option for the general public who desires to attenuate the tear trough. It can be achieved by filling up the tear trough defect with fillers namely JuvedermÒ, RestylaneÒ or TeosyalÒ. However, in GEM Clinic, we strongly recommend the JuvedermÒ brand that is synonymous with quality assured.
Botox can also be used to improve under eye wrinkles that are usually associated with tear troughs. Once the skin is smoother, light reflects better, reducing shadowing under the eyes and improving the appearance of tear troughs.
Other periorbital rejuvenation methods i.e GEM Hydraglow, Magic PRP or even direct whitening injections can be employed to work synergistically with Botox and fillers to improve the appearance of tear trough.
Last but not least, tear trough can also be corrected via surgery. If there is an eyebag present, fat glands in the eyebag is released from its’ pocket and transposed downwards to fill up the tear trough defect. Clients emerge refreshed and younger though down time can be much longer than the aforementioned non-invasive methods and costs mores.
