Have you ever woken up one day and wonder how you managed to pile up on the years? There are unwanted fat deposits and saggy parts on the face; eyebags, jowls, double chin and even the dreaded turkey neck. Old age indeed has a way of creeping up on us without us realizing it.
The main cause of skin sagging is none other than aging. With aging, there are 4 major changes that contribute to skin sagging.
- Thinning of the skin which occurs due to gradual loss of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. This process is accelerated by UV exposure, smoking and pollution. The best example illustrating this is in the development of eyebags.
As a person ages, the overlying skin and muscle of the under-eye area thins and weakens. When the thinned skin and muscle is unable to hold the under-eye fat glands within the orbit anymore, eyebags are revealed.
- Atrophy and loss of fat pads all over the face. These fat pads give each individual their unique facial contour and definition. With their loss, the overlying skin is deprived of support and therefore sags.
- Apart from fat pads loss and atrophy, fat is also redistributed during aging. While some parts of the face lose their fat pads, other parts gain unwanted fat deposits i.e along the jawline and under the chin. These fat deposition, coupled with the already thin skin and perpetual gravity, ultimately leads to the formation of jowls and double chin.
- Lastly, research comparing CT scans of the aged and young skull showed obvious re-absorption of bone matter in the former. There is flattening of the forehead, widening of eye sockets and shrinking of upper and lower jawbones. All this constitute loss of support for the overlying skin, causing the skin to sag.
Apart from aging, another scenario that may lead to premature skin sagging will be abrupt weight loss. With obesity ever on the rise, we see more and more rapid weight-loss programmes in the guise of glamourous names popping up on the internet and social media.
However, once scrutinized, most if not all of these “diet” programmes advocate starvation masqueraded as replacement meals or beverages as a means of weight loss. As we know now, starvation only eats into our muscles and crucial subcutaneous fats.
By the end of the “diet” programmes, the participants look haggard, worn-out, hungry and the weight quickly bounces back as they throw in the towel and return to their normal diet.
For the steel-willed ones who did manage to lose a significant amount of weight, the skin on both face and belly sags as they are unable to catch up with the rapid loss in weight.
We offer a host of treatments to improve sagging skin as listed below:
HIFU; HIFU is short for High Intensity Focused Ultrasound. It is a non-invasive treatment where focused ultrasound is delivered via a probe deep into the skin. Heat is generated in the tissues leading to immediate contraction and later collagen synthesis gradually. The end result is skin tightening and firming.
INDIBA; INDIBA uses a proprietary technology to deliver heat deep into the skin without injuring the superficial skin layer to effect fat melting, skin tightening and body contouring
Tickle lipo; Tickle lipo is a component of GEM Clinics’ minimally invasive body sculpturing programme. This one-of-a-kind technology uses compressed gas to power its’ patented nutational handpiece to disrupt and then aspirate fat cells.
During the liposculpture procedure, the nutational cannula also gently massages from underneath the skin. This leads to gradual contraction of skin during the healing phase post liposculpture.
Ultra Z; Ultra Z employs high energy ultrasound waves to melt unwanted fat deposits. The heat energy generated during the procedure also warms the skin resulting in skin tightening.
PDO or polydiaxanone is a bio-compatible, absorbable suture material used in GEM clinic thread lift procedures. Mono thread is fine thread inserted just below the skin to stimulate circulation and collagen production. Barbed threads come into play when there is mechanical lifting needed for saggy parts of the face. Mono and barbed threads combine to provide best lifting and rejuvenating results.
