Rhinoplasty complications

Key Facts

Surgery is not without its risks

Most Asians are not satisfied with the appearance of their nose. The common features of an Asian nose will be:

  1. Flat nose bridge
  2. Round and bulbous tip
  3. Short nose with wide base.

There are 2 alternatives when it comes to nose enhancement / augmentation. Those who abhor surgery can choose from temporary dermal fillers or PDO threads to improve the appearance of the nose.

On the other hand, those who prefer longer lasting results should go for nose implants.

There are 2 main materials used when doing nose implant:

  1. Synthetic - Silicone / Gore Tex / Medpor / Silastic
  2. Autologous (own) – Septal, ear or rib cartilage
  3. Combination

Unfortunately, surgery is not without its risks. Possible complications from nose implant surgery using synthetic implants include:

  1. Infection
  2. Deviated implant
  3. Implant rejection
  4. Visible implant outline
  5. Nose bridge skin atrophy
  6. Tip necrosis with implant extrusion

*Implant rejection or extrusion is very unlikely in clients who do autologous nose implants.

The experience of the surgeon plays a big part in preventing rhinoplasty-related complications. This translates to proper client and implant selection that is crucial to ensure the right fit without putting too much pressure on the skin.

Clients are followed-up closely post surgery to look for any early signs of infection. Clients also need periodic follow-up in months and years to come to ensure no nasal skin thinning. Otherwise, the implant will have to be removed.
