As quoted from WHO (World Health Organization) webpage, overweight and obesity are defined as abnormal or excessive body fat accumulation that may impair health.

Though not entirely accurate, Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most commonly used tool to gauge whether a person’s weight is healthy.

The BMI reading is derived by dividing a person’s weight in kilograms with the square of his height in meters (kg/m2).

For adults, a BMI ³25 is overweight and a BMI ³30 is obese.

According to the Economist Intelligence Unit’s “Tackling Obesity in Asean” released in early 2017, Malaysia takes first place with a prevalence of obesity at 13.3% and overweight at 38.5%. The study covered Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines and Vietnam. Add up the numbers and it roughly translates to 1 out of 2 Malaysians whose weight is unhealthy.

This can be attributed to the abundance of staple foods high in simple carbohydrates and glycemic index like nasi lemak, roti canai, nasi briyani, noodles, “kuih”, etc. What makes matters worse is that these meals are taken together with ridiculous amounts of gravy to add oomph to the meal, and as we know, gravy contains lots of sugar.

Other compounding factors include reluctance to exercise, instead preferring a sedentary lifestyle, an appalling state of the public transport system that encourages everyone to ride or drive everywhere and poor awareness of how harmful being overweight can be to one’s health in the long run.

As life becomes modernized, more and more super/hypermarkets replace smaller grocers and sundry shops. Consumers prefer to shop in supermarkets as they are usually housed within shopping malls where the environment is more conducive and there are other activities to explore.

However, try to recall the layout of any supermarket which you’ve been to recently and you’ll remember that the fresh produce aisle is always towards the back end of the store. From the entrance, one has to pass many rows and heaps of processed foods before reaching the fresh produce section, by which time, the shopping trolley would’ve been filled to the brim with unnecessary processed / junk food.

At checkout, sweets and chocolates are displayed at eye level for both adults and children to make unnecessary purchases as well. All this indirectly pushes a lot of processed food high in sugar but low in nutrition to us and our children, so much so that we’ve forgotten how natural food taste like. This has no doubt contributed to the rise in the obesity epidemic in the modern world.
